Technically, it's a very simple process to have somebody register with a valid and verifiable identity.

It's even easier to then have the system to suppress the details by default (with the person responsible for running that system held accountable should those details subsequently become public knowledge). Donating sites already offer a similar option for anonymous donors.

People can the assume an on-line "identity" and post as freely as they like - there now being the risk that if they say the wrong thing to the wrong person, they can be identified.

This site has a pretty good process for stamping on shit about others being posted, yet we are freely "liberal" on out colourful use of language. That also makes us a prime target for those who want to "clean up" the Internet, but that is a separate discussion.

Basically, act like a cunt if you wish, but don't try and play the victim if, as a result of that cuntishness, you get held to account for it.

Governments can be criticised
Perfectly acceptable to say Boris Johnson is a lying gibbering incompetent cock.

Think what they are getting at is when politicians receive death threats to them, their staff or families. Or racist or sexist abuse. Things that are illegal
Nothing wrong with people posting under pseudonyms but their true identity should be discoverable if they are acting illegally
Have said before that registering on the big social media sites should be like opening a bank account in proving your identity.

Good luck with that. These are "sensible" people you're referring to here. "Educated" people, "Intelligent" people. "Right thinking" people.

All (ALL) they were doing was simply hoovering up all this free (FREE!!!) stuff they were offered.

There's more chance of seeing Amy Winehouse live on next week's Top of the Pops than there is of people accepting that they are the problem here.

"Who is ‘they’?"

The individual politicians and journalists who always push for this sort of thing, and whoever else backs them.

A year and a half ago I'd have agreed with the rest of your post.

I don't see this not passing.

Governments, unfortunately, need to be able to be criticised anonymously.

Google the hundred flowers campaign.

And again... the fact they're using this murder to push for this shows how dishonest they're being.”

Who is ‘they’? At the moment, there is no sign that the government are pushing for this. They are being asked by MPs to bring a Act before Parliament but MPs and the government are not one and the same even if they sit on the same side of the House.

Not sure 'popular' laws are what is needed, probably better that laws are; required, fair, just but most importantly applied equally without prejudice.

We don't need any new laws.

Can we just drop this lie that any of this is about stopping the plebs from saying rude words to each other?

No one should have to "think twice" about criticising the government.

"No but if you do this and/or make a valid criticism, your name can be put on a list and they can keep an eye on you. "

they can do the same right now. People gave away control and true anonymity the second they picked up smartphones and signed up to social media.
The act of getting rid of online anonymity would, hopefully, just make people think twice. Would they say what they're prepared to say under an pseudonym, under their own name? If not, probably shouldn't be saying it. No different on here, i wouldn't post anything that i wouldn't say to the person i'm addressing it to. Others would. They're easy to spot as cowards.

"I very much doubt you'll got prosecuted for saying 'Boris Johnson is a fat cunt' under your name"

No but if you do this and/or make a valid criticism, your name can be put on a list and they can keep an eye on you. What if someone then decides that being on this list is a threat somehow and it bars you from certain types of employment, freedom to travel, or more?

Im just gonna say it, this is another step towards a social credit score system. Dunno how much more obvious it needs to be.

Sometimes all we know about despotic regimes or corrupt institutions comes from anonymous accounts on the internet. If a government is trying to shut that avenue down, then its for their benefit, not yours.

Exactly.

During the period with the gov enacting some of the most controversial and unpopular laws and policies in living memory, in an era with unlimited access to information where it seems there's a new scandal every week... suddenly the government want to end online anonymity and they want to do it for OUR OWN GOOD.

Fucking hell I'm actually astonished anyone swallows that.

Re: Sir David Amess - RIP (Southend City)
therein lies the problem with where the internet - and society has got to, Hermit.

Why does that criticism need to be anonymous? I very much doubt you'll got prosecuted for saying 'Boris Johnson is a fat cunt' under your name. You might for saying you'd like to kill him.
And rightfully so.

mashed, the 'establishment' is the the preference over the left or right leaning view which is sad........the 'establishment' needs to be questioned & challenged but sadly not by those mugs, they are most the time nullifying each other and so backwardly biased.......

Re: Sir David Amess - RIP (Southend City)
People should always be allowed to criticise their government and they should be able to do it anonymously. The reasons for this are obvious as it enables people to say what they want without fear of prosecution. Banning people from doing this under the guise of stopping 'racism' is an excellent example of why it makes a bad law. Who gets to define what 'racism' is? We used to be clear on it by now it covers any criticism of any non-white figure or even criticism of what they say/believe.

Mark Francois MP: 'We now want David's law so that it will be illegal in future for people to go online under a cloak of anonymity and call people everything under the sun.'

a quote from your original post.
That isn't censorship. Its simply saying that if you have something to say, have the courage to say it under your own name.
The reality may well be as you suggest, and if so, I'll happily admit i was wrong - but i find it very hard to find any issue at all with the premise of that statement.
